The condition that is known as pes planus, or flat feet, is common among babies. It is an ailment that most people are born with, and the arch generally develops during the teenage years. This condition can correct itself, as the muscles and soft tissues become stronger. A child’s foot is often examined by a podiatrist, who may be able to determine if there is an underlying cause. Some of these can include cerebral palsy, connective tissue disorders, or juvenile arthritis. There may be an abnormal foot structure that can cause flat feet, in addition to possible muscle or ligament damage. Additionally, adults who are overweight may have flat feet, as a result of the extra pressure the feet endure from completing daily activities. Many people who have this condition find it beneficial to perform specific stretches that may gradually improve flexibility and range of motion. If you or your child have flat feet, please consult with a podiatrist who can address any concerns and answer questions you may have.

What Are Flat Feet?

Flatfoot is a condition in which the arch of the foot is depressed and the sole of the foot is almost completely in contact with the ground. About 20-30% of the population generally has flat feet because their arches never formed during growth.

Conditions & Problems:

Having flat feet makes it difficult to run or walk because of the stress placed on the ankles.

Alignment – The general alignment of your legs can be disrupted, because the ankles move inward which can cause major discomfort.

Knees – If you have complications with your knees, flat feet can be a contributor to arthritis in that area.

Symptoms

  • Pain around the heel or arch area
  • Trouble standing on the tip toe
  • Swelling around the inside of the ankle
  • Flat look to one or both feet
  • Having your shoes feel uneven when worn

Treatment

If you are experiencing pain and stress on the foot you may weaken the posterior tibial tendon, which runs around the inside of the ankle.

Walking barefoot can be better than walking in ill-fitting shoes, high heels, or flimsy flip-flops but there are a host of dangers that walking barefoot can bring on, from stepping on glass to acquiring an infection. Flip-flops should not replace sturdier casual footwear even if they look fashionable. Wearing flip-flops for a prolonged time can cause pain. Researchers have discovered that wearing flip-flops alters the way one walks, and an altered gait can lead to serious sole, heel, and ankle problems. This footwear also lacks foot support. One scrunches their toes to keep them on their feet while the heel is lifted into the air. This motion stretches the plantar fascia, the band of connective tissue that runs from the heel to the toes on the bottom of the foot, and can cause inflammation to the heel and sole, as well as heel spurs and tired feet. Flip-flop wearers shorten their stride and turn their ankles inward, probably to keep the flip-flops from falling off, which can cause ankle problems. If you have questions about wearing flip-flops, contact a podiatrist, an expert in everything related to the feet and ankles.

Flip-flops can cause a lot of problems for your feet. If you have any concerns about your feet or ankles, contact the foot specialists from Marvel Foot & Ankle Centers. Our doctors will assist you with all of your foot and ankle needs.

Flip-Flops and Feet

Flip-flops have managed to become a summer essential for a lot of people. While the shoes may be stylish and easy to slip on and off, they can be dangerous to those who wear them too often. These shoes might protect you from fungal infections such as athlete’s foot, but they can also give you foot pain and sprained ankles if you trip while wearing them.

When Are They Okay to Wear?

Flip-flops should only be worn for very short periods of time. They can help protect your feet in places that are crawling with fungi, such as gym locker rooms. Athlete’s foot and plantar warts are two common fungi that flip-flops may help protect your feet against.

Why Are They Bad for My Feet?

These shoes do not offer any arch support, so they are not ideal for everyday use. They also do not provide shock absorption or heel cushioning which can be problematic for your feet. Additionally, you may suffer from glass cuts, puncture wounds, and stubbed toes since they offer little protection for your feet.

More Reasons Why They Are Bad for Your Feet

  • They Slow You Down
  • May Cause Blisters and Calluses
  • Expose Your Feet to Bacteria

Falls are common among seniors and once one falls, their chances of falling again are doubled. Unfortunately, falls can create serious injuries, including head injuries and broken bones, which can make everyday activities and mobility difficult. Causes can be a weakness in their lower body, being deficient in Vitamin D, or having trouble with walking or balance. Other falls may be from medicines that impact steadiness on the feet and cause poor vision. Wearing ill-fitting footwear can also make one more likely to fall. Broken ankles are often the result of falls, and this can further impact normal life. It is important to pay attention to risk factors and try to remedy as many of these as possible to prevent falls. Visiting a podiatrist can be helpful in being evaluated for fall risks and getting specific suggestions for changes that need to be made.

Broken ankles need immediate treatment. If you are seeking treatment, contact the foot specialists from Marvel Foot & Ankle Centers. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Broken Ankles
A broken ankle is experienced when a person fractures their tibia or fibula in the lower leg and ankle area. Both of these bones are attached at the bottom of the leg and combine to form what we know to be our ankle.

When a physician is referring to a break of the ankle, he or she is usually referring to a break in the area where the tibia and fibula are joined to create our ankle joint. Ankles are more prone to fractures because the ankle is an area that suffers a lot of pressure and stress. There are some obvious signs when a person experiences a fractured ankle, and the following symptoms may be present.

Symptoms of a Fractured Ankle

  • Excessive pain when the area is touched or when any pressure is placed on the ankle
  •  Swelling around the area
  •  Bruising of the area
  • Area appears to be deformed

If you suspect an ankle fracture, it is recommended to seek treatment as soon as possible. The sooner you have your podiatrist diagnose the fracture, the quicker you’ll be on the way towards recovery.

When a woman carries a baby to term during pregnancy, her body undergoes a variety of different physical changes. Many of these changes concern the feet. If you are expecting, you might consider being especially mindful of the extent to which the pregnancy might be affecting fluid retention in the feet and lower legs. For example, during pregnancy, blood circulation to the feet may be diminished, which can cause excess fluid retention. Certain factors may increase one’s susceptibility to this condition. Namely, consuming food that is high in salt and exercising may increase a pregnant woman’s fluid retention and result in swollen feet. Please contact a podiatrist if you are concerned about fluid retention in the feet during pregnancy.

Pregnant women with swollen feet can be treated with a variety of different methods that are readily available. For more information about other cures for swollen feet during pregnancy, consult with the foot specialists from Marvel Foot & Ankle Centers. Our doctors will attend to all of your foot and ankle needs.

What Foot Problems Can Arise During Pregnancy?

One problem that can occur is overpronation, which occurs when the arch of the foot flattens and tends to roll inward.  This can cause pain and discomfort in your heels while you’re walking or even just standing up, trying to support your baby.

Another problem is edema, or swelling in the extremities. This often affects the feet during pregnancy but tends to occur in the later stages.

How Can I Keep My Feet Healthy During Pregnancy?

  • Wearing orthotics can provide extra support for the feet and help distribute weight evenly
  • Minimize the amount of time spent walking barefoot
  • Wear shoes with good arch support
  • Wear shoes that allow for good circulation to the feet
  • Elevate feet if you experience swelling
  • Massage your feet
  • Get regular, light exercise, such as walking, to promote blood circulation to the feet
