Parents can have differing opinions when it comes to their children walking barefoot. Their reasons can range from the child preventing a foot injury when the shoes are kept on to children possibly having a heightened sense of their environment while walking barefoot outdoors. Recent studies have shown that waking barefoot may benefit the brain and nervous system and this may result from the child being more conscious of their surroundings. An additional benefit can be improved balance due to the feet getting accustomed to walking on various surfaces. Frequently wearing shoes may inhibit the natural toe spread and may gradually lead to sustaining a foot injury. Falling episodes may be reduced when the lower legs and feet are strengthened by walking barefoot. If you have questions about your child’s foot development, please confer with a podiatrist who can confirm if walking barefoot is good for their overall development.

The health of a child’s feet is vital to their overall well-being. If you have any questions regarding foot health, contact the foot specialists of Marvel Foot & Ankle Centers. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Tips for Keeping Children's Feet Healthy

  • Make sure their shoes fit properly
  • Look for any signs of in-toeing or out-toeing
  • Check to see if they have Clubfoot (condition that affects your child’s foot and ankle, twisting the heel and toes inward) which is one of the most common nonmajor birth defects.
  • Lightly cover your baby’s feet (Tight covers may keep your baby from moving their feet freely, and could prevent normal development)
  • Allow your toddler to go shoeless (Shoes can be restricting for a young child’s foot)
  • Cut toenails straight across to avoid ingrown toenails
  • Keep your child’s foot clean and dry
  • Cover cuts and scrapes. Wash any scratches with soap and water and cover them with a bandage until they’ve healed.

Plantar warts are essentially growths on the feet and they can develop when an individual contracts the human papillomavirus, also known as HPV. These warts can feel hard on the feet and in some cases, they might cause pain. Plantar warts can develop when an individual has skin contact with HPV. Importantly, HPV may be transmitted to someone when they fail to wear shoes in a public area, such as locker rooms and public pool areas. It is also common for someone to contract HPV from infected household members. If you have plantar warts, it might be advisable to take precautions to limit the extent to which you are spreading the human papillomavirus to others. This might include wearing shoes around the house if you live with others. Contact a podiatrist today if you think that you have plantar warts and want to treat this condition.

Plantar warts can be very uncomfortable. If you need your feet checked, contact the foot specialists from Marvel Foot & Ankle Centers. Our doctors will assist you with all of your foot and ankle needs.

About Plantar Warts

Plantar warts are the result of HPV, or human papillomavirus, getting into open wounds on the feet. They are mostly found on the heels or balls of the feet.

While plantar warts are generally harmless, those experiencing excessive pain or those suffering from diabetes or a compromised immune system require immediate medical care. Plantar warts are easily diagnosed, usually through scraping off a bit of rough skin or by getting a biopsy.

Symptoms

  • Lesions on the bottom of your feet, usually rough and grainy
  • Hard or thick callused spots
  • Wart seeds, which are small clotted blood vessels that look like little black spots
  • Pain, discomfort, or tenderness of your feet when walking or standing

Treatment

  • Freezing
  • Electric tool removal
  • Laser Treatment
  • Topical Creams (prescription only)
  • Over-the-counter medications

To help prevent developing plantar warts, avoid walking barefoot over abrasive surfaces that can cause cuts or wounds for HPV to get into. Avoiding direct contact with other warts, as well as not picking or rubbing existing warts, can help prevent the further spread of plantar warts. However, if you think you have developed plantar warts, speak to your podiatrist. He or she can diagnose the warts on your feet and recommend the appropriate treatment options.

If your child participates in sporting activities and complains of heel pain, it may be indicative of Sever’s disease. The heel plate becomes inflamed which may occur due to high-impact activities. Swelling and pain often accompany Sever’s disease, and it can develop in children and young teenagers. Children who develop this ailment may be affected psychologically. This may be noticeable if the child declines participation in specific activities because of chronic heel pain. Additionally, their athletic ability may suffer a setback in their chosen sport as a result of being omitted from participation. Sever’s disease is treated by stopping the activity that caused the pain, followed by performing specific stretches that can help to provide mild relief. If your child has heel pain, it is strongly urged that you contact a podiatrist who can effectively diagnose Sever’s disease and offer extended treatment options.

Sever’s Disease

Sever’s disease is also known as calcaneal apophysitis, which is a medical condition that causes heel pain I none or both feet. The disease is known to affect children between the ages of 8 and 14.

Sever’s disease occurs when part of the child’s heel known as the growth plate (calcaneal epiphysis) is attached to the Achilles tendon. This area can suffer injury when the muscles and tendons of the growing foot do not keep pace with bone growth. Therefore, the constant pain which one experiences at the back of the heel will make the child unable to put any weight on the heel. The child is then forced to walk on their toes.

Symptoms

Acute pain – Pain associated with Sever’s disease is usually felt in the heel when the child engages in physical activity such as walking, jumping and or running.

Highly active – Children who are very active are among the most susceptible in experiencing Sever’s disease, because of the stress and tension placed on their feet.

Two of the most common causes of nerve-related foot pain are neuropathy resulting from diabetes and nerves that are compressed. Symptoms of nerve-related foot pain include a burning, aching, or tingling feeling. Sometimes it may feel as if you are receiving an electric shock. Other telltale signs are when the pain gets worse at night or while doing certain activities. Several conditions may cause nerve pain in the foot. Included is Baxter’s neuropathy, which is the entrapment of the inferior calcaneal nerve that runs beneath the base of the arch nearest the heel. Other causes are Morton’s neuroma, which is the compression of nerves between the toes, and peripheral neuropathy, which may be the result of any number of causes. Relief from nerve pain in the feet can be experienced through electrical stimulation, orthotics, certain anti-inflammatory medications, and cortico-steroid injections. To find out which treatment is best for you, it is suggested that you consult with a podiatrist for a full examination and diagnosis.
